Manchester City’s Micah Richards ‘gutted’ by England snub
Manchester City's Micah Richards admits his disappointment at being overlooked by Roy Hodgson for Euro 2012
Micah Richards has revealed his disappointment at being left out of Roy Hodgson’s England squad for Euro 2012.
There was no place for the 23-year-old in Hodgson’s 23-man squad announced on Wednesday, with the former Liverpool boss opting to take Glen Johnson as England’s first-choice right-back to Poland and Ukraine and Phil Jones as potential cover.
But Richards, who has 13 caps for the national side, insists he will not dwell on the disappointment and is looking forward to a break over the summer before helping Manchester City defend their Premier League crown.
“Of course my initial reaction is to be gutted but a manager is there to pick a squad and he cannot pick everyone,” Richards told City’s website.
“No one will be cheering louder than me for England when the championships start. My really good mates from City and other clubs will be playing and of course I want my country to win.
“I will take myself off on holiday and come back refreshed and ready to start again next season.”
Looking ahead to next season, Richards added: “There is so much to look forward to starting with City’s trip to China and Malaysia and then the Community Shield match against Chelsea.
“We are defending the Premier League title and we will be ready to be competitive in the Champions League.
“Hopefully I will play my share of those games and will be selected for the England squad at some time in the future.”
