Man Utd’s capture of Kagawa could see Modrić stay at Spurs

Spurs will welcome imminent arrival of Kagawa at United

There’s another piece of good news for Tottenham Hotspur with the announcement that Manchester United have all but agreed a deal with Borussia Dortmund for playmaker Shinji Kagawa.

And it comes hot on the heels of Eden Hazard, who would probably have joined Spurs if Chelsea had not won the Champions League, joining the Blues – another boost for Harry Redknapp.

There’s no doubting that both United and Chelsea will move again in the transfer market but having already paid out large sums for creative midfielders, you have to wonder if they either will now meet Tottenham’s asking price for Luka Modrić.

His contract situation does not help Spurs but chairman Daniel Levy drives a notoriously hard bargain and it now looks like two potential suitors have chosen to focus their attentions elsewhere.

Modrić is likely to light up the Euros and take Croatia to the latter stages but Tottenham supporters will be hoping Slaven Bilić’s side slip out of the group stages and he will slip under the radars.

Success for Tottenham in this transfer window would be simply standing still.

Bould and Wenger need to rethink Carling Cup policy

Arsenal’s new assistant manager Steve Bould came out on Thursday and said he was delighted with this season’s Carling Cup progress and in particular the emergence of Nico Yennaris, Ignasi Miquel, Oguzhan Ozyakup and Francis Coquelin, who all played their part.

The competition has previously acted as a fantastic platform for the likes Robin van Persie, Cesc Fàbregas, Gael Clichy, Kieran Gibbs, Jack Wilshere, Manu Frimpong, Nicklas Bendtner and many more Arsenal youngsters to enjoy their initial taste of first team football.

Having watched Yennaris, Miquel, Ozyakup and Coquelin all play this season – it’s difficult to see any of them being superstars for the first team going forward.

Miguel will be 20 in September, he needs to go and spend a season out on loan, Özyakup will also be 20 and he’s unlikely to make the grade.

Coquelin is already playing in the first-team but it’s his ability to play right-back, left-back and in midfield that has attracted Arsene Wenger to his potential, while Yennaris is 19 and despite playing in the Premier League against Manchester United this season – is not good enough.

Despite these youngsters are average at best, that doesn’t mean they won’t make the grade and feature in the Arsenal first-team for many years to come – just look at Johan Djourou for instance who is atrocious but still playing regularly at the Emirates.

But what’s the point in blooding average youngsters to the Arsenal first-team when there’s average players better equipped at trying to win silverware.

Surely Arsenal would be better off playing Djourou and giving him some game-time rather than blooding Miquel in the competition.

The Gunners have got a little confused with their policy in the Carling Cup and it’s time for a change.
