Joey Barton has been handed a 12-game ban by the Football Association after the Queens Park Rangers captain was found guilty of two counts of violent conduct during the 3-2 defeat by Manchester City.

The 29-year-old received a red card at the Etihad on the final day of the Premier League season after he clashed with City forward Carlos Tévez, and Barton will serve a four-game ban for striking the Argentina international.

He was also charged for two clashes involving Sergio Aguero and City’s captain Vincent Kompany.

Barton had accepted a charge over the incident with Aguero, but he denied the second breach of violent conduct involving the Belgian defender, however the Regulatory Commission found against the midfielder.

In addition to his initial suspension for the original offence with Tévez – this ban consists of three games for violent conduct plus a further match as this was the player’s second dismissal of the season – the two further breaches resulted in an eight-game ban to run consecutively to the four matches.

Barton was also fined £75,000 by the FA, and he is set to face an independent inquiry by QPR, with his future at Loftus Road in doubt.

The chairman of the Regulatory Commission stated after the hearing: “There are rules of conduct that should be adhered to, and such behaviour tarnishes the image of football in this country, particularly as this match was the pinnacle of the domestic season and watched by millions around the globe.”
