Roy Hodgson ‘very disappointed’ as Gareth Barry ruled out of Euros

Roy Hodgson admits losing Gareth Barry from England’s Euro 2012 squad is “very disappointing” after the Manchester City midfielder picked up a groin injury during the victory over Norway on Saturday.

The 31-year-old came on as a half-time substitute for captain Steven Gerrard in Oslo but lasted 23 minutes before being forced off with the problem.

A scan on Monday showed a lower abdomen injury and the FA confirmed he will miss the tournament in Poland and Ukraine, with Everton’s Phil Jagielka called up as his replacement.

“I’m very disappointed to lose Gareth, not only was he a member of my original 23-man squad but he has featured prominently in the England team over the last few years,” England manager Roy Hodgson said in a statement released by the Football Association.

“I know how much he wanted to be part of the tournament but I’m sure he will still have a part to play with England after the Euros. I wish him a speedy recovery.”

Twitter reacts to news of Barry’s injury

Former Liverpool striker Stan Collymore ‏(@StanCollymore) believes Barry’s absence will be a blow: “Disappointed for Gareth Barry not making the Euros. He loves playing for England – no fuss, just turns up when selected.”

And Scott Carline (‏@ScottCarline) agrees with Collymore: “I think when David Silva votes Gareth Barry as his #MCFC Player of the Year then that itself speaks volumes.”

Meanwhile, Matthew Davies (‏@MattAtNotch) questions Barry’s replacement: “Gareth Barry replaced by Phil Jagielka. That’s like replacing your oven with a dishwasher, or replacing a wheel with an exhaust pipe.”

And Dan A ‏(@dan_almo) suggests Manchester United’s Michael Carrick may regret turning down the chance to be on standby: “Wonder if Michael Carrick is regretting his decision not to be on England standby list. Better than Gareth Barry anyway I think.”
