Steven Gerrard offered his backing to Wigan Athletic boss Roberto Martínez after the Spaniard met with Liverpool’s owners this week to discuss the vacant managerial position at Anfield.

The 38-year-old was pictured with Liverpool owner John Henry on Thursday after Martínez flew to Miami from Barbados, where he was on holiday, for talks about post.

Gerrard, who is preparing for England’s friendly against Norway on Saturday, insisted he will support Martínez should the Wigan boss become Kenny Dalglish’s successor at Anfield.

“We’ll have to wait and see,” said Gerrard.

“My focus has been on the game. I’m aware Roberto Martínez has been talking to the club but all I’ve heard about him is positive.

“If he is going to be the manager he’s got my full support.”

Wigan owner Dave Whelan, who brought Martínez to Wigan from Swansea City in 2009, revealed on Friday that the Reds had made his manager an offer, and set next Thursday as the deadline for the Spaniard’s future to be resolved.

“He had a meeting on Thursday with the owner of Liverpool in Miami,” Whelan told BBC Sport. “I think they have made some kind of offer.

“They will speak again on Tuesday. I’ve said I want a decision by Thursday.

“We are having a meeting on Tuesday when he’s going to put everything to me. He’s very honest. He arrives back in the morning and we will get together in the afternoon.”

Martínez is expected to meet Fenway Sports Group next week to hold further talks about becoming the Reds’ next boss.
