Michael Owen is not a target for United Arab Emirates Pro League side Al-Shabab, according to the club’s vice-president.

The 32-year-old was released by Manchester United this summer after scoring 17 goals in 52 appearances for the Red Devils since joining in 2009.

Owen has been linked with a move to Tony Pulis’ Stoke City but recent reports have suggested he is on the verge of joining Al-Shabab.

The club’s vice-president Khalid Bu Humaid revealed he is set to hold discussions with Owen’s agent but moved to cool the speculation linking the striker with a switch to the UAE side.

“There have been some talks and his agent is coming to Shabab Club tonight but there is nothing to confirm with regard to him signing or not,” Bu Hamaid told Gulf News.

“This is a general talk with no obligations. When someone calls us we listen to what they have to say and see what they have to offer.

“But this part of the world is not the market for Michael Owen anymore. Michael Owen is on the downhill right now. He’s not one of our options. He’s 32 and he only played a handful of matches last season.

“We’ll listen to what his agent has to say and report that back to the coach [Marcos Paqueta], who is currently in Brazil.”

Owen scored 118 goals in 216 appearances for Liverpool but ended his Anfield career to join Real Madrid in 2004, before moving back to the Premier League with Newcastle United a season later.
