Andre Santos has heaped praise on the “amazing” Robin van Persie and says he understands why the Arsenal striker is pondering a move away from north London.

Van Persie won the Premier League golden boot after netting 30 goals for the Gunners last season and was named the PFA Players’ Player of the Year following a scintillating campaign.

Speculation over the Dutchman’s future has been rife in recent weeks, with the 28-year-old’s Gunners contract set to expire at the end of next season.

Arsenal are reported to have offered the forward a new, improved deal but Van Persie, who has said he will not discuss his contract situation until after Euro 2012, is yet to commit his future to the Gunners amid interest from Manchester City and other top European clubs.

And Santos admits he understands why the striker’s head might be turned by the prospect of a move away from Emirates Stadium.

“He’s amazing,” Santos told ESPN. “Besides being a great person, he is also one of my best friends at Arsenal. He is a guy who has given me full support.

“He has been at the club eight years and this was his best season. Sometimes, a player is interested in getting to know other teams and of course, playing well, he has attracted interest from many other teams. Of course your mind is affected.

“He is currently fully focused on the Euros and then, after, he can talk about whether he wants to stay with Arsenal.”
