Arsène Wenger remains convinced Robin van Persie will stay at Arsenal – and has even told an Italian journalist he would buy him an ice cream if he moves to Juventus.

Van Persie’s Gunners future has been the subject of intense speculation in recent weeks, with the Holland striker entering the final year of his contract in north London as he continues to stall over a new deal.

Manchester City and Juventus have both been touted as possible destinations for the 28-year-old forward, but Wenger is convinced he will stay at The Emirates and says there is “no reason” why he would choose to join the Serie A champions.

“He will stay at Arsenal,” Wenger told Italian newspaper La Repubblica. “There is no reason why a top player, a big champion would want a move to Serie A – in terms of the prestige of the league, the level of play or financial considerations.”

Emphasising his confidence that Van Persie, who netted 30 league goals for the Gunners last term, will not move to Serie A, Wenger added: “If he moves there, I will buy you a caramello [Italian ice cream].”
