Brendan Rodgers ‘to decide Alberto Aquilani’s Liverpool fate’
Newly-appointed Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers will decide Alberto Aquilani's future, according to the player's agent
Alberto Aquilani would be happy to stay at Liverpool if Brendan Rodgers decides to keep hold of the Italian midfielder, according to the player’s agent.
The 27-year-old returns to Anfield after a season-long loan which saw Aquilani score one goal in 23 appearances for Serie A runners-up AC Milan.
The former Roma star was signed by Rafael Benítez in a £20m deal in 2009 but Aquilani struggled with injuries in his first season in the Premier League, resulting in a one-year loan deal at Juventus for the 2010-11 campaign.
However, he could be set to salvage his Liverpool career if Kenny Dalglish’s successor decides the Italy international is part of his first-team plans.
“The new Liverpool coach will decide Alberto’s fate,” Aquilani’s agent, Franco Zavaglia, told Italian radio station Radio Mana Mana.
“We will have to wait and see what he thinks about the player and whether Alberto will be of any use to the Reds.
“Alberto has a contract at Liverpool for another two years and they will let us know about their intentions soon.
“He would be happy to stay at Liverpool if he was given the right opportunities.”
Meanwhile, Liverpool’s Danish centre-half Daniel Agger revealed he is open to signing a new deal at Anfield – the 27-year-old has two years left on his current contract.
“It’s no secret that I’m happy to be in Liverpool. Otherwise, I would not have been there for six years,” Agger told sporten.dk.
“I have not [discussed a new contract] but if they come with an offer I will surely sit down and talk with them.
“It’s not something that is urgent, for I have contract until 2014, but if they ask I will listen.
“I am looking forward to meeting the new coach. I’ve seen what he has done at Swansea, and it has been impressive.”
