Former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba has joined Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua on a two-and-a-half year deal after a decorated eight-year spell at Stamford Bridge.

The 34-year-old scored the winning spot-kick in the Blues victory over Bayern Munich in the Champions League final on penalties, and Chelsea supporters and fans of the Premier League paid tribute to the Ivory Coast international on Twitter.

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand ‏(@rioferdy5) is looking forward to coming up against Drogba in pre-season: “Looking forward to playing against Didier Drogba when MUFC play Shanghai Shenhua in Shanghai on 25th July #mutour”

And Tokunbo Olatokun ‏(@toki81281) tips Drogba to score against United for a final time: “He will score RT @rioferdy5: Looking forward to playing againstDidier Drogba when MUFC play Shanghai Shenhua in Shanghai on 25th July.”

Chelsea supporter Ayokunle Olomo ‏(@aydotman) thanks Drogba for the memories: “I’m saying a big thank you to Didier Drogba. Thanks for the goals man, all 157 of them. Especially love the last one, that penalty – WINNING!”

A fellow Blues supporter Edu Mayden (@edu948) echoes the previous poster’s sentiments: “Didier Drogba off to Chinese football, 2 year deal signed with Shanghai Shenhua. Good luck Didier and thanks again! #Legend”

Drogba’s popularity has increased since moving to Chelsea in 2004, highlighted by Everton fan Rich Mellor ‏(@rpcm91): “Noooooo! Didier Drogba has officially left the Premier League. Gutted.”

But then again, many will not miss his antics as Theo Joel (‏@ThanasisJoel) proves: “Didier Drogba has singed for Chinese teams on two-and-a-half year deal and will get 200k a week. Now he’s gone won’t see him or hear about him again.”

However, Chelsea fan Alex Smith ‏(@alexsmith0129) says Drogba will never be forgotten – by Blues supporters at least: “Didier Drogba signs for Shanghai Shenhua. All the best big man! You will never be forgotten at Chelsea!!! #Hero”

Meanwhile, Isaiah Gardner ‏(@Mr_IGardner) believes he has worked out Drogba’s motives for joining: “Didier #Drogba signs for Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua. I wonder why he’s gone to them of all teams… €€€$$$”

But Reuben Omollo (‏@Robo_96) considers it a good location for the legend to wind his career down: “Didier Drogba will finally be playing in China. A good place for retirement.”

And Ng Jun Jie ‏(@JunnJie) expects Drogba to dominate Chinese defences like he did in England: “Congrats to Didier Drogba on his transfer to Shanghai Shenhua! Asia – fear the beast!”

A spoof account for Chelsea captain John Terry (‏@BigJohnTerry) has the real reason Drogba joined Shanghai Shenhua: “Didier Drogba has signed for Shanghai Shenhua, told me it’s not for the money, he’s just a massive fan of spare ribs & egg rolls, fair play!”

Surprise, surprise, Roy Keane ‏(@RagingRoy) has to disagree – it’s a parody profile, of course: “What do I think of Didier Drogba going to China? Listen, we all like crispy beef and egg fried rice, but I wouldn’t want to eat it every day.”

Finally, a mock account for former Chelsea boss André Villas-Boas (‏@AndreVillyB) thinks Drogba may have branched out into another sport: “Didier Drogba signs in China, their Olympic diving team are said to be very happy with their capture. #AVB”
