Roy Hodgson has revealed that Liverpool were interested in signing Eden Hazard from Lille during his doomed tenure at Anfield.

Hazard is set to sign for Champions League winners Chelsea this summer in a deal worth a reported £32m after attracting interest from a host of top Premier League clubs in recent months.

And Hodgson, who lasted less than seven months in charge at Anfield before he was replaced by Kenny Dalglish in January 2011, admits he was left impressed by the 21-year-old Belgium playmaker’s “electrifying” display when he watched him in a Ligue 1 game.

“I went to watch Hazard as a potential signing when I was coaching Liverpool so I know how good he is,” said Hodgson ahead of his England side’s Euro 2012 warm-up game against Belgium at Wembley on Saturday.

It was a game between Lille and Monaco and he had one of those days where he electrified the stadium.

“Every time he got the ball it seemed the crowd jumped to attention because they expected something to happen. Quite simply, what Hazard will bring to the Premier League is his talent.

“That is what Chelsea have invested in and I am sure now he will be looking forward of playing in the Premier League.”
