Euro 2012: Wayne Rooney ‘itching’ to play, says Danny Welbeck
Danny Welbeck says his Manchester United team-mate Wayne Rooney is "itching" to start his Euro 2012 campaign with England

Danny Welbeck has revealed Wayne Rooney is “itching” to play for England at Euro 2012, with the suspended Manchester United striker set to return for the final Group D game against Ukraine.
The 26-year-old forward is half-way through a two-game suspension following his red card during England’s 2-2 draw in Montenegro last October.
And Welbeck, who impressed after starting up front alongside Ashley Young in England’s 1-1 draw against France on Monday, claims his United team-mate is raring to go ahead of his likely return for the last group game.
“We all know the passion Wayne has for football,” said Welbeck. “He’s itching to get out on the pitch.
“It will be better for us once his suspension is done and he can come in and play for us.”
Meanwhile, Welbeck is expecting an open game against Sweden on Friday – Erik Hamren’s side were the third top scorers in qualifying for the tournament – and he believes England will improve on their opening performance against Les Bleus.
“From a neutral perspective, the Sweden game will be fun to watch,” said Welbeck.
“When it opens up, there will be goal-scoring opportunities.
“I think in the France game, as a start for us, we set out our platform.
“We really want to build on that from now on – I think we can improve a lot more. I was quite isolated at times but, at that level of football, you’re not going to get the possession you are used to and you’ve got to take it in your stride.” ![]()
