Harry Redknapp happy at Spurs despite missing out on England job
Harry Redknapp admits the chance to manage England would have been hard too decline, but insists he is happy at Tottenham
Harry Redknapp admits the chance to manage England would have been too good to turn down but the Tottenham Hotspur boss insists he is happy at White Hart Lane.
The 65-year-old was tipped to take charge of the national team before Roy Hodgson was appointed as Fabio Capello’s successor after the Italian stood down from the England post in February.
But Redknapp revealed the Football Association did not approach him over the position and the Spurs manager emphasised that he is happy working in club football.
“I was never approached, I wasn’t that disappointed,” Redknapp told BBC Sport.
“People will say it’s because I didn’t get the job. But I love club football. I love the day-to-day of being with the players, every Saturday going to Old Trafford, Anfield and The Emirates. I enjoy that.
“A couple of months away from that and I would miss it. That’s what keeps me going – the day-to-day involvement.
“Of course [I would have taken it]. It would have been difficult to turn it down. At the same time, I absolutely love what I’m doing at Tottenham. It’s a great club.”
But Redknapp says he wants to stay at Tottenham and hinted that his future at White Hart Lane would be resolved later this summer.
“It [the speculation linking him with the England job] didn’t affect me. It never affected the way I felt,” he added.
“We just seemed to have a bad spell of luck. Sometimes you win games and everything goes your way. But everything that could have gone against us went against us in the end. But we still finished fourth.
“I’ve got a year left on my contract and I enjoy what I do there. I’ll sit down with Daniel [Levy] when the opportunity comes. He’s had a very difficult time. He lost his mother last week so he’s got more important things to be dealing with at the moment.
“When the time is right we’ll sit down – I’m sure.”
