Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel denies talking to any other clubs

Martin Skrtel has dismissed speculation linking the Slovakia international with a move away from Liverpool this summer.

The 27-year-old scored seven goals in 164 appearances for the Reds since moving to Merseyside in a £6.5m deal from Zenit St Petersburg in 2007.

Skrtel forged a successful centre-half partnership with Daniel Agger under former Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish last term – only eventual Premier League champions Manchester City and Manchester United boasted a better defensive record.

The Slovakia defender has been linked with a move to Roberto Mancini’s side in recent weeks, but Skrtel has quashed the transfer speculation, insisting he is eagerly anticipating next season with Brendan Rodgers in charge at Anfield.

“I will be leaving for Liverpool on 6 July,” said Skrtel in an interview posted on his website.

“I am very excited about the new season and I hope we will be ready and this time it will be much better than in the last one.

“There is also speculation about my exit from Liverpool but I can say that there was no offer on the table yet and we didn’t hold talks with any clubs.”

The defender had hinted at his unhappiness with Liverpool’s lack of progress at the end of the season and said he was particularly disappointed by the club’s failure to win more silverware.

“I heard a rumour in the press that I actually asked my club to let me go but I didn’t say anything like that,” Skrtel said.

“I still have a contract with Liverpool for the next two years. All I can say is that one trophy this season is not enough. For a club like Liverpool one trophy is simply not enough.”
