Pepe Reina has hailed Brendan Rodgers’ arrival at Liverpool as a “very good appointment” but stressed that the new manager must be given time to implement his ideas.

Rodgers, whose promoted Swansea side won many admirers last season for their attractive style of play, was swiftly brought in as Kenny Dalglish’s successor last month following the Reds’ disappointing slump in form.

And goalkeeper Reina, 29, says he cannot wait to get started under the Northern Irishman and hopes their new manager can bring some attacking flair to Anfield.

“I’m looking forward to going back to Liverpool,” Reina told the Daily Mirror. “We are very optimistic about the future. It’s a very good appointment and hopefully we can have a better season than last time.

“I watched Swansea last season and I always like to play like that. It’s better for me. I’m only a goalkeeper, but that’s my style of football. It will be very nice for Liverpool to play his way.”

Reina insists that Rodgers must be given adequate time to stamp his authority at Anfield and called on his club team-mates to be open to their new coach’s ideas.

“In football, a manager needs to have some time to change things around,” he continued. “He will bring new ideas and we have to very much pay attention to what he wants us to do when we return for pre-season training.”

“It’s not going to happen in the blink of an eye, we have to give him time. He will bring new ideas and we have to very much pay attention to what he wants us to do when we return for pre-season training.”
