Rafael Benítez has revealed he is still waiting to find a club that can match his ambitions after turning down the chance to become Sampdoria’s new manager.

The former Liverpool boss held talks with Sampdoria chiefs last week over the prospect of taking the reins at the newly-promoted side, but the 52-year-old admits he is holding out for an offer from a club more likely to challenge for trophies.

“We have had some offers but it has to be the right offer. Sampdoria were very serious, very professional and they have a project,” Benítez told Sky Sports News.

“We were talking about the project that they have and the idea that they have, and I felt they have just got promotion and want to stay in the first division. My idea is trying to find a club that can match my desire and my expectations to challenge for trophies.

“This time it was really good, I was really pleased they were thinking of me, but I am waiting for maybe another option.”

Benítez has been linked with the vacant managerial post at Tottenham Hotspur, but it now appears André Villas-Boas is the leading candidate to take charge at White Hart Lane.

The Spaniard has been out of work since being sacked by Internazionale in December 2010.
