Rafael Benítez is in talks with Sampdoria over the possibility of becoming the Serie A side’s new manager, the club’s owner has revealed.

The newly promoted side are said to be keen to secure the services of the former Liverpool and Internazionale manager, despite current head coach Giuseppe Iachini guiding the club back into Italy’s top flight via the play-offs last season.

“There have been contacts with Benítez,” Sampdoria owner Riccardo Garrone told Sky Sport Italia. “But it’s a work in progress.”

Benítez has been one of the names linked with the vacant managerial position at Tottenham Hotspur following Harry Redknapp’s sacking earlier this month.

The Spaniard, who has been out of work since being sacked by Internazionale in December 2010, was also touted as a contender for the Chelsea job before Roberto Di Matteo was appointed permanent head coach at Stamford Bridge.
