City must let Dzeko go and snatch Van Persie

Edin Dzeko certainly contributed to Manchester City’s title-winning campagin, particularly the header which dragged Roberto Mancini’s side back into the game against Queens Park Rangers on that dramatic final day.

But the Bosnia-Herzegovina international must realise he will only ever be ‘Plan B’ at the Eastlands outfit.

His impressive tally of 14 league goals last season was achieved largely in the early part of the campaign, after which he faded as he struggled to adapt to the way City’s creative engine ticked.

David Silva, Samir Nasri and Sergio Aguero look to play neat, intricate football, and as a result, Dzeko looked out of place leading the line, and was often more of a hindrance.

With Bayern Munich reportedly interested, Mancini should allow Dzeko to move to the Champions League runners-up if they make an offer in the region of £20m.

That would open up a space for a striker more suited to City’s style, and in the current market there is only one man that could fit the bill – Arsenal’s Robin van Persie.

Rodgers makes all the right noise at Anfield unveiling

After a prolonged interviewing process that left Liverpool on the verge of appointing Roberto Martínez, former Swansea boss Brendan Rodgers was finally unveiled as Kenny Dalglish’s successor on Friday.

Rodgers spoke eloquently and knowledgeably about his new club, and he promised to “fight for his life” to bring the glory days back to Liverpool, but wisely stressed the point that it won’t happen overnight.

He also promised to do it by playing his trademark possession-based brand of football, with a renewed defensive solidity that was lacking at Anfield this season.

Whereas Roy Hodgson’s appointment felt like a step into the unknown and Kenny Dalglish’s return more of a response to an emergency call, Rodgers’ unveiling felt like the beginning of a new era.

Liverpool supporters, not particularly known for their patience if their treatment of Hodgson is anything to go by, will have to give Rodgers at least a couple of seasons before judging him.

No doubt owners Fenway Sports Group intend to, having painstakingly weighed up all the options available to them before opting for Rodgers.

But he will still need to hit the ground running and improve on Liverpool’s eighth-place finish last season, otherwise the knives could come out sooner than anticipated.
