Manchester United confirmed the signing of Crewe Alexandra’s highly-rated forward Nick Powell for an undisclosed fee on Tuesday.

The 18-year-old, who scored 16 goals in 45 appearances last season, has signed a four-year deal at Old Trafford, with one optimistic Red Devils supporter on Twitter suggesting Powell has the potential to be as good as England captain Steven Gerrard.

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand ‏(@rioferdy5) welcomes Nick Powell: “Welcome to Manchester United to Nick Powell (@NPowell25) a quality young player with a bright future at our club! Good luck!”

Crewe Alexandra fan Scott Morris ‏(@SheSaidNoMarlon) wishes Powell luck: “Best of luck to Nick Powell at Manchester United, he’s thoroughly deserved the move and now we need to plan for the future!#crewealex”

Red Devils supporter Daniel Hughes ‏(@HOFF82) believes it’s a good signing: “Excited by this new United signing Nick Powell. I know it’s a low level but from what I’ve seen so far he looks a really good prospect.”

Meanwhile, Kevin Evans (‏@TheCornerView) doesn’t know what to expect: “#MUFC making early moves signing Nick Powell, will be interesting to watch his development.”

But Billy Hawkes (‏@Hawkesy84) is clued up Powell’s potential: “Nick Powell has looked absolute class this season for Crewe. Hope he makes it at Manchester United, could be an international within a few years.”

And Sport Fanatic (‏@SportFanaticUK) reckons Powell can be as good as England captain Gerrard: “In my humble opinion, Nick Powell has the ability and potential to be as impressive as Steven Gerrard has been, #MUFC”

Manvir Basi ‏(@mambo_5) rightly praises Crewe’s conveyer belt of talent: “Some of the talent Crewe have created in the past always have great potential, Nick Powell & Dean Ashton included.”

But Ryan Leech (‏@RyanLeech9) believes there has been an overreaction: “I’m not saying he’s a good or bad player, but United fans raving over Nick Powell, you’ve seen nothing of him apart from his play-off final goal.”

And Jack Sherriff ‏(@JackSherriff) considers it a big move too soon for Powell: “Nick Powell, you may have signed for United, but let’s face it, you’ll struggle to make the reserves.”

United supporter Aled Jenkins (‏@AledJenkins3) is not happy with the signing: “Nick Powell….I hope is a wind up or is it genius….really??? Prove me wrong please Fergie!!!”

Meanwhile, Manchester City fan Aiden Dewhirst ‏(@Aidener) is not concerned by Powell’s signing: “Every time I hear Nick Powell on the news, I can’t help but cower in fear at the thought of him tearing @VincentKompany apart next season.”

And Shane Byram (‏@ShaneByram) can’t see Roberto Mancini losing too much sleep: “Nick Powell. What a signing. Man City will be shaking in their boots. Aguero who?”
