Milan release Flamini but retain interest in Liverpool’s Aquilani

Mathieu Flamini has been released by AC Milan after the former Arsenal midfielder failed to agree a contract extension at the San Siro.

The 28-year-old made 100 appearances for Milan in a four-year spell at the Serie A side after leaving Arsène Wenger’s Gunners outfit in 2008.

Milan’s chief executive Adriano Galliani confirmed the France international is now a free agent, with former Netherlands international Clarence Seedorf also leaving the seven-time European champions.

“The time has expired for Flamini and we have already told his lawyer that we will not wait any longer,” Galliani told Gazzetta dello Sport.

Meanwhile, Galliani hinted Liverpool midfielder Alberto Aquilani could yet join Milan on a permanent deal after the former Roma star returned to Anfield after a season-long loan at the Serie A runners-up.

“Before August 31, another midfielder will arrive,” Galliani added. “It could be Aquilani or somebody else. We haven’t spoken yet to Aquilani. He is a Liverpool player.”

On Tuesday, the 27-year-old’s agent revealed the Italy international would be happy to salvage a career at Anfield if new Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers decided to keep the midfielder.

“The new Liverpool coach will decide Alberto’s fate,” Aquilani’s agent, Franco Zavaglia, told Italian radio station Radio Mana Mana.

“We will have to wait and see what he thinks about the player and whether Alberto will be of any use to the Reds.

“Alberto has a contract at Liverpool for another two years and they will let us know about their intentions soon.

“He would be happy to stay at Liverpool if he was given the right opportunities.”
