Newcastle United have made a £4m offer for France right-back Mathieu Debuchy which has been swiftly rejected, according to Lille manager Rudi Garcia.

The 26-year-old France defender has been in impressive form for Laurent Blanc’s side against England and Ukraine at Euro 2012, prompting interest from a host of European clubs.

Debuchy has scored 17 goals in 288 appearances for the Ligue 1 outfit and won the French league and cup double with Lille in 2011.

Alan Pardew has enjoyed great success recruiting players from France in recent seasons, with Yohan Cabaye and Hatem Ben Arfa helping to inspire the Magpies to a fifth-place finish last term.

Lille boss Garcia admitted there is uncertainty surrounding Debuchy’s future at Lille, but the 48-year-old laughed off Newcastle’s bid for the France international.

“He is torn between staying with us and playing in the Champions League in our new stadium or going elsewhere,” said Garcia.

“If he does go and it is a sporting progression, then we will be happy to see him evolve – but we have not planned to replace him.”

“I do believe that Newcastle have faxed an offer of £4m – but they must have the wrong player.”

Garcia added he is not surprised that Debuchy has attracted interested from other clubs around Europe after a string of eye-catching displays for France at the European championship.

“No [it hasn’t surprised me], as he plays with France as he does with us, he plays high and attacks but defensively is also very rigorous and he exudes confidence,” said Garcia.

“Without insulting [Anthony] Reveillere and [Bacary] Sagna, he is trying to show he should always be right-back for France.”
