Per Mertesacker has reassured Arsenal fans that Lukas Podolski will have plenty to offer at The Emirates next season, despite the forward’s quiet start to Euro 2012.

Germany moved to the top of Group B after Mario Gómez’s brace helped his side to a 2-1 victory over the Netherlands on Wednesday.

Podolski, who has agreed to join Arsenal after the European championship, managed just one attempt on target as he was forced to undertake defensive duties, helping Philipp Lahm cope with dangerous Netherlands winger Arjen Robben.

But Mertesacker, who was an unused substitute in the game, has issued his backing for his future club team-mate.

“Defensively it was a great game from Lukas,” Mertesacker told Arsenal’s website.

“He had to cover for Philipp Lahm, with Arjen Robben on his flank, and he did it very well. Especially in the first half, he covered him all the time and it was two against one on Robben.

“I think that was more important than his attacking qualities today. But every Arsenal fan will soon see what he can do offensively.”

The centre-half was pleased to see Joachim Löw’s side move to the top of Group B and admitted it was a relief that Robin van Persie was only able to score once against the Germans.

“The goal wasn’t enough for Holland, and that’s good for us,” he added.

“But our relationship is very good, very respectful, and it was nice to see him – we had a good conversation. He’s fit and I’m going to be 100 per cent soon, so it will be great to join up again for pre-season at Arsenal.”
