Andy Johnson is relishing the chance to help Queens Park Rangers finish in the top ten next season after the former England international signed a two-year contract at Loftus Road on Monday.

The 31-year-old will link up with his former manager Mark Hughes on 1 July after sealing a move to the Hoops on a free transfer from Craven Cottage.

Johnson, who has scored 51 goals in 178 Premier League appearances, is eager to be part of an exciting new era at QPR, and insisted he will not be fazed by competition for places at the club.

“The aim for QPR is to not be in the same position that they were last year,” Johnson told QPR’s website.

“There’s a great squad here with some top players, who didn’t warrant being in the position that they were in on the final game of last season.

“The aim is to build on that and try and get the team in the top ten.

“The club has got to be looking at finishing in the top ten next season with the money that’s being spent here and the players that they’re going to invest in.

“With additions, the current squad and the management team that’s in place here, I don’t see any reason why we can’t.

“There’s a great squad here with some top strikers – including Djibril Cissé.

“It’s going to be tough in terms of competition, but that’s what you want. You want to be kept on your toes and you want to fight for your place. Healthy competition is good. It can only make you better and can only make the team improve.”
