Ferdinand, Owen, Seaman & more: Twitter reacts to England win
Wayne Rooney's second-half winner sealed a 1-0 victory over Ukraine as England's performance prompted praise on Twitter

Wayne Rooney’s second-half header helped England set up a quarter-final showdown with Italy after a 1-0 victory over co-hosts Ukraine.
Another battling Three Lions’ performance prompted a huge reaction on Twitter from England legends past and present, across an array of sports.
Here are some of our favourites, in chronological order.
Liverpool legend Terry McDermott (@TerryMac777) reckons Roy Hodgson’s side have what it takes to win: “Not suprised by the England XI, it should be good enough to win the game, we have good options on bench with Andy Carroll and Theo Walcott if needed.”
Bristol City midfielder Jody Morris (@morriskid) is concerned by Ukraine’s early dominance of possession: “Wow. I wouldn’t mind getting out of our half.”
Former England cricket captain Michael Vaughan (@VaughanCricket) wants the Three Lions to retain possession: “Keep the ball please…. #cheers”
Former Tottenham striker Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) is unimpressed by Glen Johnson’s defending: “Any chance Glen Johnson can show Konoplyanka down the line and stop letting him cut inside?”
While Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) can’t fathom while James Milner has started ahead of Theo Walcott, while also spotting a potential Arsenal signing: “Milner has to go backwards in attack because he hasn’t got the speed to beat the full-back. Absurd. Bring on Walcott…..Love this guy Yarmolenko – sign him up, Arsène Wenger.”
Former Liverpool striker Neil Mellor (@NeilMellor33) is unsurprised by Ukraine’s plucky first-half display: “It was a tough half. The co-hosts certainly up for this game and fans making it even tougher for England. Expected this though. #comeonengland”
England bowler Monty Panesar (@Montyp713) would like to see the Arsenal contingent on the pitch: “Time to get some Gooner power – Bring on Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, inject some pace! #euro2012”
Finally a goal, and Queens Park Rangers striker Jay Bothroyd (@jaybothroyd) is impressed by the captain’s contribution: “Obviously great skill and cross from Steve Gerrard – he should have been captain from the start.”
Meanwhile, West Bromwich Albion midfielder Steven Reid (@stevenreid12) sums up Gerrard succinctly: “Gerrard… absolute #Class!”
Guess who’s scored? Coleen Rooney (@ColeenRoo): “There’s lots of screaming in our house!!!! Yayyyyyy Dadddddyyyy!!!!!”
Former England bowler Darren Gough (@DGoughie) never doubted Wayne Rooney: “Stick that you Rooney doubters!! The difference!”
Aston Villa goalkeeper Ian Taylor (@IanTaylor7) is impressed by the striker’s finish: “@WayneRooney!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You don’t have to play well to be a goal scorer!!!!!! #england”
Then a moment of controversy, and Republic of Ireland striker Noel Hunt (@boyhunt) cannot believe the decision: “Michel Platini still not having goal line technology!!! Might as well go back to using Rocks for Balls!! #StoneAge”
Bolton Wanderers midfielder Stuart Holden (@stuholden) knew this issue would rear its head: “It was bound to happen at some point. When will Uefa listen to the masses and bring in goal line technology? Too focused on underpants!”
England’s Rugby World Cup winner Matt Dawson (@matt9dawson) sees the funny side – for Three Lions’ supporters at least: “Never wanted that goal line technology anyway. Out of interest what other jobs do those muppets in black on the line do? #whocares”
Arsenal legend Ian Wright (@IanWright0) agrees with Dawson, though he suggest a few changes for Hodgson: “Good job them extra official’s are useless….We need pace on there! Can you imagine Walcott running on to that with Rooney in the middle! Got to find a way to get behind them.”
Ex-England forward Michael Owen (@themichaelowen) prefers to praise the defending: “Striker was offside leading up to that ‘not given goal’ but the save by Joe Hart and clearance by John Terry were sensational!”
Former West Ham midfielder Frank Sinclair (@FrankMSinclair) is impressed by England’s experienced players: “Ashley Cole immense along with Gerrard, Joleon Lescott and Parker top performers for England #thumbsup”
While England cricket legend Ian Botham (@BeefyBotham) wants to see Andy Carroll on: “Andy Carroll on yet….?? Get him on my kind of old style centre forward..!!! #gogetemandy”
Former Arsenal goalkeeper David Seaman (@thedavidseaman) believes Hart deserves credit for a great save: “Love it England, but need to hear more appreciation for Joe Hart’s save in the 74th minute!!!!! #greatadjustment”
Ex-Newcastle United defender Warren Barton (@warrenbarton2) is delighted with the result: “Great win for England well done Roy Hodgson & the boys look like a team …”
England Women’s striker Kelly Smith (@kjs8eng) hands out her man-of-the-match award: “Gerrard MOM for me, another assist too #euro2012”
Finally, Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand (@rioferdy5) is confident of reaching the last four: “We will do the Italians #fact!” ![]()
