Wimbledon 2012: Aussies haven’t performed, admits Sam Stosur

Sam Stosur admitted the Australian contingent have failed to perform at Wimbledon after the US Open champion lost 6-2 0-6 6-4 to unseeded Arantxa Rus in the second round.

The 28-year-old was unable to capitalise on her Dutch opponent’s poor start to the match and lost the first set, however, this year’s French Open semi-finalist rallied to win the next six games without reply.

But the fifth seed, who was the only survivor of the nine Australians who entered the first round, crumbled in the decisive set, with Rus breaking her opponent’s serve to complete victory on No1 Court.

“Obviously it’s a pretty woeful performance by all of us, but it’s not through lack of trying or not wanting to be here or anything like that. I think it’s just one of those things that’s happened,” said Stosur.

“You have to look at something on a whole, for a longer period of time than just one event, to say that we’re in this dire straits kind of mode right now.

“Of course it can be better. Myself and all the other players that I’m sure I can speak for wish we had a better tournament.”

Stosur has never progressed past the third round at Wimbledon, and the world No5 admitted that grass is not her preferred surface.

“This year I hated it [grass] a little bit less than the previous years,” she added.

“It’s just disappointing because you want to do well here. It’s a great tournament. I still love playing here at Wimbledon, but obviously it hasn’t been my best tournament.”
