Arsène Wenger has dismissed reports linking Arsenal with a move for out-of-favour Real Madrid midfielder Nuri Sahin.

The 23-year-old joined the La Liga champions in a €10m (£8m) deal last summer but José Mourinho used the Turkey international sparingly, with the former Borussia Dortmind star making just 10 appearances.

Arsenal, who are expected to be without Jack Wilshere for the start of the Premier League campaign, were heavily linked with a move to sign Sahin on a season-long loan deal on Friday.

But Wenger rubbished the speculation and revealed the club are not close to making any new signings at the moment.

“We did not sign anybody today, this report is wrong. We are not signing anybody at the moment – we are not close. In the future you never know,” Wenger told Arsenal’s website.

Meanwhile, Robin van Persie’s Gunners future still remains uncertain after the Arsenal captain revealed he would not be signing a new deal at the club, with Manchester City, Manchester United and Juventus all keen to sign the striker who will be a free agent next summer.

Wenger refused to comment on the Netherlands international’s future, and instead pointed out that Arsenal have already strengthened their attacking options this summer following the arrival of Lucas Podolski and Olivier Giroud.

“We could come back forever on Van Persie. We have our main strikers at home and Van Persie is one of them,” he added.

“But we have Podolski and Giroud who are at home, so we have plenty of strikers. For us at the moment it is to prepare for the season – it is more than any individual player.”
