Manchester United have revealed Antonio Valencia will wear the club’s iconic No7 shirt after the previous occupier Michael Owen was released by the club earlier this week.

The 26-year-old follows in the illustrious footsteps of United legends like George Best, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Here, we take a look at some of the reaction to the news on Twitter.

David Dawodu ‏(@david21_D) can’t see what Valencia has done to merit the iconic shirt: “Why Valencia?”

But he is very much in the minority, Berry (‏@onlyoneberry): “Valencia is going to wear the famous No7. Legend! Great player! Good to see Man Utd to give him that extra bit of responsibility :-)!”

Alastair Anthny (‏@alastairanthony) will be delighted to see the shirt number a bit more frequently: “Valencia will wear the legendary No7. This going to be good! Finally I can see No7 on the pitch more often.”

Meanwhile, ARP13 ‏(@AndikaRifqi) lists the legends to have worn the iconic shirt – spot the odd one out time: “#Magnificent7 : George Best, Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona, David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo, Michael Owen, Antonio Valencia! #MUFC”

That’s more like it from Alif Alfiandy ‏(@rekrazie): “Ecuador winger Valencia requested the No7 shirt – worn previously by United legends such as Best, Robson, Cantona, Beckham and Ronaldo.”

Marcel Ignatius ‏(@marcel_ignatius) agrees with the decision: “He’s a worthy candidate RT @ManUtd_Fact: #ManUtd have confirmed that Valencia will wear the famous number 7 shirt from 2012-13.@AntoV25”

Oliver Rhodes ‏(@OliverRhodes1) believes it is merited: “Antonio Valencia handed the No7 shirt. Deserved following a terrific 2012 thus far. #MUFC”

While Bhuvan Apoorva Jha ‏(@bhuvan_apoorva) thought Nani would be handed the No7: “Always thought Nani would get it but Valencia would be an excellent choice for legendary #7 shirt at #manutd.”

But Sameer ‏(@sameer7) is delighted: “Brilliant decision by the club to give Antonio Valencia the iconic No7 #MUFC shirt. No other current squad midfield member more deserving.”

Even Arsenal supporter Matt Wilson (‏@MattWilson1992) reckons it’s the right call: “Valencia gets the iconic No7 shirt – well deserved too.”

Finally, who should Robert Bower ‏(@rocketrobbie76) get on the back of his shirt next season? “Pleased that Valencia got the No7 shirt. Much deserved. Tough decision on shirt choice now.”
