Champions League revenue 2011-12: Chelsea net over £47m after triumph

Chelsea were the biggest earners in last season’s Champions League, with the west Londoners landing over €59.9m (£47m) in prize money and television revenue, Uefa has revealed.

The eventual winners were handed a €9m bonus in prize money by Uefa for their triumph over Bayern Munich in the final, which Roberto Di Matteo’s men won on penalties following a 1-1 draw after extra-time.

Runners-up Bayern Munich were the second-highest earners, landing in excess of €41m, while Barcelona were close behind with €40.5m of the €754.1m total spread across all 32 clubs.

Manchester United were the sixth-biggest earners, despite the Red Devils’ failure to navigate their way out of the group stage, with Sir Alex Ferguson’s side netting over €35m. Manchester City, who also failed to reach the round of 16, landed €26.5m.

Arsenal received €28.2m for their journey to the last 16, where they were eliminated by AC Milan, placing the Gunners eighth on the list of top earners for 2011-12.

During the group stage, clubs received a €800,000 bonus for every win and €400,000 for every draw. Real Madrid were the only club to net the maximum €4.8m available last season.

Uefa has said that Champions League revenue for clubs will rise 22 per cent over the next three-season cycle.
