Mclaren’s Lewis Hamilton took pole position for Sunday’s Hungarian Grand Prix after a dominant qualifying performance.

Hamilton, who drove his 100th grand prix in Germany last weekend, completed the fastest lap of one minute 20.953 seconds to claim McLaren’s 150th pole.

The British driver, who was fastest in both Friday practice sessions, continued his impressive weekend form and appears to be the man to beat in Hungary.

Lotus’s Romain Grosjean will start from second on the grid, trailing Hamilton by 0.413 seconds, while Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel qualified in third ahead of Jenson Button.

“It has been a really positive weekend so far,” said Hamilton. “The guys have done an incredible job this weekend as always, preparing the car and to finally see the upgrades working this weekend”.

“I’ve been able to put the car in places that I couldn’t previously do so generally every lap has been quite good through practice and qualifying”.

“This is motor racing and we’re not saying we’re lax about it, as we know we have a lot of work to do, so we are trying to start that work this weekend”.

Despite topping the timesheets in final practice, Red Bull’s Mark Webber will begin the race from 11th after he was knocked out in the second session.

Speculation that Ferrari does not have the fastest car in terms of outright pace in the dry were proved in qualifying, as world championship leader
Fernando Alonso qualified in sixth – his team-mate Felipe Massa will start behind him in seventh.
