Jan Vertonghen has admitted his frustration at Ajax and Tottenham Hotspur’s failure to reach an agreement for the Belgian defender.

The 25-year-old centre-half has scored seven goals in 220 appearances for Ajax and skippered the club to their second successive league title last term, picking up the Eredivisie Player of the Season award for his contribution to the Dutch club’s successful campaign.

The Belgium international has been heavily linked with a move to Spurs in recent weeks but the north London club, who are expected to appoint André Villas-Boas as Harry Redknapp’s successor on Tuesday, have yet to meet Ajax’s asking price.

Vertonghen is now expecting to start the new season in Holland but the defender remains optimistic over the chances of a deal being reached by the end of the summer transfer window on 31 August.

“Of course I’m thinking about that as there’s still no clarity. We’re talking about my future here. I can’t say that I’m not thinking about it, and it obviously worries me,” Vertonghen told Ajax’s website.

“However, the fact is that there’s no agreement yet, so I’ll have to accept that. The most important thing for me right now is regaining match fitness.

“I’m still an Ajax player for now and will always give 100 per cent for the club. It’s the start of a new season, and I’ll start it at Ajax.

“It’s impossible to say when this will become clearer, but it has to be well before 31 August. I’m focusing on Ajax for now, though.”
