Joey Barton is set to train with League Two outfit Fleetwood Town as the Queens Park Rangers midfielder looks to get prepared for the new season.

The 29-year-old will serve a 12-game ban following his sending off at Manchester City on the final day of the season, and reports suggest Fleetwood have received permission from the Hoops to allow Barton to train at the Highbury outfit.

However, speculation over a potential loan move sent Twitter into a frenzy as supporters expressed their surprise at the prospect of Barton dropping down to the fourth tier of English football.

Chris Hermitage (‏@ChrisHermitage) is shocked by the speculation: “Joey Barton to Fleetwood Town. What the hell? He can’t play for 12 games and if he is going on loan he should go to the Championship #QPR!”

Robbie Hayman ‏(@RobbieHayman) would not like to be Barton if the midfielder does drop down to League Two: “Joey Barton training with Fleetwood !!! He would get some abuse from the terrace this season if he signs for them!!!#wycombewanderers”

While Jak Harris (‏@SharkyCufc) sees the funny side of Barton training with Fleetwood Town: “Joey Barton training with Fleetwood Town? Is this the same Barton who would ‘walk into the England team’?!”

And Mark Purvis ‏(@markjamespurvis) is not alone in this thought: “When I saw Fleetwood Town and Joey Barton both trending, I thought ‘they can’t be related…’!”

Adam Ogden ‏(@acogden) reckons this will be the most absurd football story of the year if Barton swaps QPR for Fleetwood Town: “What’s the most ridiculous football story you’ve heard this year? You can forget it if Joey Barton goes to Fleetwood.”

But Joe Lloyd-Jones ‏(@JoeLloydJones) rubbishes reports of a move: “Joey Barton is more likely to join Fleetwood Mac than Fleetwood Town!”

While Rory The Roman (‏@JaymzShikari) remembers Barton getting refused a visa while at Newcastle when the Toon went to the USA on a pre-season tour: “Joey Barton is training with Fleetwood because he’s probably been denied a working visa abroad like he did at Newcastle.”

And Phil Berry ‏(@PhilBerry94) reckons Barton is too good for League Two: “Joey Barton moving to Fleetwood Town, you’ve got to be kidding me. He is much too good for League Two!

Calvin Jake Ferguson ‏(@CalFerguson) loves the idea of Barton joining Fleetwood: “Joey Barton would get snapped if he joined Fleetwood…I can’t see it being more than fitness training until the season starts…..”

Jordan Dean ‏(@Jordash23) is unsure of Barton’s future: “Joey Barton to train with Fleetwood Town from Thursday.. Wonder if they will sign him or is he just training nearer home? #Fleetwood #QPR”

Finally, The Twelfth Man ‏(@TheTwelfth_Man) clears up any misunderstanding: “Joey Barton is NOT joining #FTFC, him and Mangan are best mates since their youth and Mangan’s doing him a favour to keep fit. #QPR”
