Tottenham have confirmed the signing of Hoffenheim’s Gylfi Sigurdsson after the Iceland midfielder impressed during a loan spell at Swansea City last season.

The 22-year-old has moved to White Hart Lane in a reported £8m deal after the north Londoners appointed André Villas-Boas as their manager on Tuesday.

Sigurdsson reportedly rejected Liverpool’s advances, prompting plenty of reaction from fans of both clubs on Twitter.

Here are some of the Tweets that caught our eye.

Anirbit ‏(@AnirBeat) kicks us off by hailing Tottenham’s new signing but reckons Luka Modric should be allowed to leave the club: “Gylfi Sigurdsson to @spursofficial …brilliant signing!! Now #FreeLuka”

However, Joshua Gorton ‏(@JoshuaGorton95) thinks it could be Rafael van der Vaart who leaves White Hart Lane: “Gylfi Sigurdsson has officially signed for Spurs. I think that could spell the end of Rafael van der Vaart’s time at White Hart Lane!”

Daniel Woodley ‏(@dwoodley1990) is very excited by the midfielder’s arrival: “Can’t sum up in one word how excited and happy I am that Gylfi Sigurdsson has snubbed Liverpool and signed for Tottenham! #SoHappy #COYS”

And Toby Skeels (‏@Skeelington) hopes Sigurdsson can reproduce his form with Swansea City last season: “Really pleased with the Gylfi Sigurdsson signing! Enjoyed watching him play last season and should add goals from midfield. #THFC#COYS”

Gary Scott ‏(@gscott92) is happy Sigurdsson resisted the lure of Liverpool for Tottenham: “Delighted Sigurdsson picked the club more concerned with the future instead of the past! Welcome to the Lane Gylfi Sigurdsson!! #THFC”

Liverpool supporter Anant ‏(@anantpagare) is critical of the midfielder’s decision: “Gylfi Sigurdsson picked Spurs over #liverpool. He”ll regret it later. He has chosen the subs bench over regular first-team football. We don’t want money oriented players anyway!”

But Paul Pellegrini ‏(@PauloPelle94) refutes the suggestion Sigurdsson moved to Spurs for financial reasons: “But seriously though, all you Liverpool fans saying Gylfi Sigurdsson is in it for the money… idiots…”

However, Reds fan Matty Hankinson ‏(@MattyHankinson) is disappointed to miss out on the midfielder: “Gutted Gylfi Sigurdsson has gone to #Spurs – he’s missed out on the opportunity to be loved by #LFC fans :/”

Yet Fawad Parvez ‏(@fawadparvez) reckons Henderson can fill the role Sigurdsson would have been deployed in: “Did we even need Gylfi Sigurdsson when we can mould Jordan Henderson into a similar role eventually? #lfc”

And Karl Reid ‏(@KarlReid96) hopes it means Alberto Aquilani is given a chance: “I trust Rodgers to give Aquilani the chance he needs and he will be much better than Gylfi Sigurdsson given the opportunity.”

Swansea fan Paul (‏@MrGullyCreeper) may need to check last season’s Premier League table: “Gylfi Sigurdsson has made a big mistake leaving Swansea to go to a lower team.”

While Arsenal supporter Hugo McGuire ‏(@Hugobossdre) considers it an average signing for Spurs: “Gylfi Sigurdsson has chosen Tottenham over Liverpool. Good signing, not good enough though! #COYG #AFC”

Finally, Tottenham fan Ryan Traill ‏(@ryantraill) hopes the Icelander is the first of many new arrivals: “First signing of the summer is Gylfi Sigurdsson – welcome to White Hart Lane! First of many new faces this summer I hope #THFC!”
