Liverpool’s owners Fenway Sports Group removed a report on its website which claimed the Reds had signed midfielder Clint Dempsey from Fulham on Wednesday.

The 29-year-old scored 17 goals in 37 appearances for the Cottagers last season and the report, which has now been altered, momentarily sparked excitement among Liverpool supporters over the possibility of signing the USA forward.

Here are some of the Tweets that caught our eye.

Liverpool fan Josh ‏(@halesy90) would be delighted to see Dempsey at Anfield: “FSG, the people who own #LFC, are claiming they have signed Clint Dempsey on the company website! #HappyDays #LFC”

And Josh P ‏(@joshpoole23) believes the versatile midfielder would be a great asset: “Clint Dempsey is a fantastic signing for Liverpool considering he doesn’t mind playing anywhere across the midfield and upfront and he chips in with goals.”

But A M Graham ‏(@magnet2112) issues a word of warning based on the last two people to swap Fulham for Liverpool (Roy Hodgson and Paul Konchesky): “Clint Dempsey signs for Liverpool. The last two transfers from Fulham to #LFC ended in tears so will the American prove a success?!”

Arsenal supporter Hinesh Patel ‏(@hin101) would welcome the American at The Emirates: “Clint Dempsey would be a good signing for Liverpool. What are you doing Mr Wenger?”

However, Kenny Lomas ‏(@KenzisaGooner) is sceptical about the announcement: “If Clint Dempsey hasn’t joined Liverpool yet like Fulham claim, I can see Fulham stalling the deal hoping someone else makes a bid!”

Wayne Littlewood ‏(@Waynelittlewood) has a feeling Liverpool’s owners may be left red-faced here: “If we don’t sign Clint Dempsey by the end of the day NESN is going to look incredibly stupid after jumping the gun.”

Kay Jay ‏(@kay_sesen) is excited by Liverpool’s prospective line-up next season: “Liverpool have signed Clint Dempsey. Alongside Borini and Suarez, this is a marked improvement. I look forward to watching #lfc this year.”

Billy Murdock ‏(@AlrightBill) is a big Dempsey fan: “A lot of talk of Clint Dempsey this transfer window. Must say I do rate him not my favourite American though – it’s all about Landon Donovan.”

Finally, Diego Vazquez (@DiegoV_RN) reckons Andy Carroll is definitely set to leave the club: “So Clint Dempsey is going to Liverpool, looks like Andy Carroll is done for at Anfield. Dempsey and Suarez should be dope to watch though!”
