Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed Manchester United are interested in signing Brazil international Lucas Moura.

The 19-year-old has scored once in 15 appearances for Brazil – and United supporters largely welcomed Ferguson’s declaration of interest in the Sao Paulo midfielder on Twitter.

Here are some of the Tweets that caught our eye.

Bassa Yousha (‏@bassayousha17) reckons the deal must now be close to completion: “Fergie wouldn’t say that they are interested if the deal isn’t close, just not his style. Let’s hope Lucas Moura puts pen to paper.”

While Kimani Gabriel ‏(@DJ_Yardman) is excited by the prospect of adding Lucas and Robin van Persie to United’s squad: “Robin van Persie and Lucas Moura to United – add that to Wayne Rooney, Nani, Shinji Kagawa, Antonio Valencia, Ashley Young, Danny Welbeck, Javier Hernandez – the attacking talent is mad!”

But Jamie Lindsay ‏(@Jamie_Lindsay) is more pragmatic: “Lucas Moura would be a real sign of intent from #MUFC, but where does he play? Right midfield & sell Nani? Behind the striker & play Kagawa deep? Left midfield & drop Young?”

Sam (@samlockley) likes this new side to Ferguson: “Sir Alex Ferguson showing a new side, extensive talks on the Glazers and stating that the club are interested in Van Persie and Lucas Moura. Never seen this.#mufc”

Alun Belmont (@ALTO101010) certainly believes the deal must be almost done: “I hope I’m not reading too much into this but has Ferguson has just pretty much confirmed we are about to buy Lucas Moura?!”

Jordan Pomeroy ‏(@JordanPomeroy) reckons United should be signing a defensive midfielder: “Following on from Lucas Moura’s imminent signing for Manchester United, I would have thought that their priority is a centre-midfielder who can tackle?”

While Xo!bile ‏(@Bassilos) urges caution: “Same was said when Nani and Anderson were signed. RT @folajomi:lucas moura : big problem for the rest of the league!!!!”

And Dan Cleverley (‏@xClevs) thinks Lucas could emulate Andy Carroll in terms of impact: “Lucas Moura – overpriced, bigger flop than Andy Carroll?”

Arsenal supporter Stefan Doyle ‏(@Stefan_Doyle) is looking forward to seeing Lucas in the Premier League: “As gutted as I am if #ManUtd sign another wonder kid and not #AFC; I am pretty excited to see how good Lucas Moura will be in the #BPL!”

Dean McDougall ‏(@Darth_Deandu) thinks Ferguson is guilty of hypocrisy: “So United likely to sign Lucas Moura. After Ferguson giving out about City and Chelsea spending cash. He’ll cost around £20m+ surely?”

Finally, Simon Marshall ‏(@SimonMarshall6) reckons Nemanja Vidic’s return from injury is bigger news: “As much as everyone is going on about these Lucas Moura rumours, the bigger news is Vidic returning to full training. best defender around.”
