Sir Alex Ferguson hints Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov could be allowed to leave Manchester United this summer

Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed Manchester United may be willing to sell Dimitar Berbatov this summer.
The 31-year-old provided the assist for Federico Macheda’s winning goal in a 1-0 pre-season victory over AmaZulu after the Bulgarian’s agent revealed on Tuesday that the striker is keen on a move to Serie A.
The former Bayer Leverkusen forward has scored 56 goals in 149 appearances for the Red Devils after completing a £30.75m move from Tottenham Hotspur to Old Trafford on the final day of the summer transfer window in 2008.
“I don’t need to herald Dimitar’s abilities,” Ferguson told United’s website.
“He’s a fantastic talent. He didn’t get the amount of football he wanted last season. It’s difficult for him at his age to accept second place in the forward line.
“The likes of [Wayne] Rooney, Chicharito [Javier Hernandez] and [Danny] Welbeck were all in front of him last season. It’s been difficult. But in fairness to him today he applied himself well and did very well with the first goal.
“The boy obviously wants to leave. That’s a different matter. I’m easy about it. If he stays, I’ll be happy. If somebody comes in for him and Dimitar wants to leave, we’ll assess it.”
The Red Devils manager was pleased with United’s first victory of their pre-season tour, with AmaZulu providing a stern test for the Premier League runners-up.
“We’re satisfied,” he added. “We always like to win our first game. It was a good work-out for us. In the second half, I thought AmaZulu increased their aggression and got closer to us, making it more difficult.
“In general, we showed some signs of tiredness towards the end, but we expect that in the first game of the tour. We played some good football and scored a nice goal. It was a good match.” ![]()
