Ferguson: Dalglish’s handling of Suárez affair contributed to axe

Sir Alex Ferguson believes that Kenny Dalglish’s handling of the Luis Suárez affair was a major factor in the decision to sack the Scot made by Liverpool’s owners.

Dalglish’s Reds slumped to a miserable eighth-place finish in the Premier League in his first full season back at the helm at Anfield but the campaign was partly overshadowed by striker Suárez being found guilty of racially abusing Manchester United left-back Patrice Evra during a game last October.

The Uruguay striker was banned for eight games but Dalglish’s apparent refusal to accept the FA’s ruling kept the debate going for the rest of the season.

And Ferguson feels Liverpool chiefs took Dalglish’s handling of the situation into consideration before giving the Scot his marching orders at the end of the season.

“I wasn’t surprised at Kenny leaving,” said Ferguson. “John Henry has obviously looked at that [the Suárez incident] and felt it wasn’t handled in the right way.

“It certainly wasn’t a nice thing to happen and it must have been part of it.”
