Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed Manchester United have made an offer for Arsenal captain Robin van Persie.

The 28-year-old, who scored 30 goals in 38 Premier League appearances last season, revealed his desire to quit Arsenal earlier this month, with the striker having one year left on his current contract.

United supporters were mixed in their response to Ferguson’s revelation on Twitter, while Arsenal fans were distraught by the possible exit of their skipper to Old Trafford.

Munu_United ‏(@munu71) is unsure whether Arsenal would be willing to do business with a bitter rival: “Boss confirms #RVP bid! Will Arsenal do business with us? Will Van Persie choose us? #MUFC”

However, Chris Winterburn (‏@Chriswin4) does not want to sign Van Persie: “I will back Van Persie to the hills if he joins the club but it is genuinely something I really would prefer not to happen.”

While Mo Suudy ‏(@mo_suudy) reckons Van Persie is heading towards the exit: “Manchester United have made a bid for Robin van Persie just after he decided to not go with Arsenal on their pre-season tour! Looks like he is leaving!”

Krishan ‏(@kdave_arsenal) is surprised to see Ferguson speak so openly about the bid: “Surprised to see Sir Alex Ferguson so public about United’s bid for Van Persie.”

And Lee ‏(@SykeLee) reckons United will be favourites for the Premier League crown if they sign Van Persie: “If Manchester United got Van Persie then other clubs can forget the Premier League title!”

Arsenal supporter Tom Andrews ‏(@teeayyderulo) would be gutted to see Van Persie leave: “Would be devastating if Robin van Persie went to Man United.”

While Jeremy Balcombe ‏(@JeremyBalcombe) reckons Ferguson is attempting to strengthen the wrong area: “Very true but Van Persie and Rooney wouldn’t be a bad strike force but we NEED a central midfielder URGENTLY!”

And Red Dave ‏(@RedDaveD) appears to agree: “I say forget Van Persie, buy Lucas and a left-back. Go looking for a central midfielder in January. Problem solved.”

Arsenal fan Fab ‏(@ilfabiano) puts the potential move into perspective: “Selling Van Persie to United is like giving your daughter to your mortal enemy for marriage.”

However, Simon Watkins (‏@simondwatkins) would be ecstatic with the signing: “So Ferguson has confirmed a bid for Van Persie. Very surprised to hear that news today! Would love to see him at United next season!”

Finally, Banjo Olorunfemi ‏(@banjoalex) believes there are comparisons to last summer and Samir Nasri’s move to Manchester City: “So Van Persie actually pulled out of Arsenal’s preseason training…wow, I’m smelling another Nasri!”
