Vincent Kompany has signed a new six-year contract with Manchester City after the centre-half captained the Eastlands outfit to their first Premier League title in May.

The 26-year-old has made 160 appearances for City since joining from Hamburg in 2008, and the club’s supporters hailed the Belgium international’s decision to extend his stay at the Etihad Stadium on Twitter.

Here are some of the Tweets that caught our eye.

Rory Duncan ‏(@RoryDuncan95) is delighted by the news: “Vincent Kompany staying at City until 2018, that’s what I like to hear!”

And Ollie Willmott (‏@ollie_willmott) considers the Belgian to be world-class: “Vincent Kompany would walk into any team!”

Opta City (‏@OptaCity) reckons the length of the contract is a rare occurrence at City: “6 – Vincent Kompany has signed a 6-year contract. The longest contract handed out by #MCFC in recent history. Kaptain.”

Harry Turner ‏(@AlexHarryTurner) is ecstatic: “Absolutely quality from Vincent Kompany signing a six-year contract!#captainfantastic”

While Mark Forth ‏(@forth1959) reckons it will be City’s best signing of the summer: “Best signing we could have made – securing Vincent Kompany on a six-year deal!! Shows how loyal and committed he is to our great club!!”

Gareth Williams ‏(@scootaa1000) agrees: “Vincent Kompany’s new deal is the best signing of the summer! Best defender in the world!”

Nathan Paulbell ‏(@NPBxo) says Kompany could become an all-time great: “Vincent Kompany signing a new six-year contract at Manchester City. Potential to be one of the greatest defenders the premier league has seen.”

But Jordan Disley ‏(@JDisley) chastises Kompany for making an error of judgement: “Vincent Kompany has made a huge mistake signing a six-year contract extension with City! He could be at such a better club than them!”

Manchester United supporter Mark Winstanley ‏(@MarkWinstanley) emphasises the popularity of Kompany: “Vincent Kompany is one City player I’d happily see in a United shirt – him and Nemanja Vidic would be some pairing! #Mufc #mcfc”

Arsenal fan Billy O’Donovan ‏(@BillyTheeKid) would love Kompany at The Emirates: “That is why I would love to have had Vincent Kompany at Arsenal. Six-year contract? #loyalty”

Another Gunners supporter Iain Whitaker ‏(@IWhit49) considers Kompany to be a nice guy: “Vincent Kompany is class.. Few remaining decent chaps in football.”

But Ben Errington ‏(@ben_errington) is unsure whether Kompany will be there in six years: “Vincent Kompany signs a new six-year deal for Man City? With all the money they throw at players they’ll have robot centre-half in six years.”

Finally, Rob O’Driscoll ‏(@FriskyODriscoll) cannot wait to see Kompany terrorise more Premier League strikers: “Great news about Vincent Kompany’s new six-year deal. Six more years of terrorising strikers in the Premier League. Wallop! You have been Kompanied.”
