Manuel Almunia is convinced Arsenal are close to ending their seven-year trophy drought.

Arsène Wenger has already bolstered his squad with the additions of Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud this summer, with Malaga’s Santi Cazorla and Real Madrid midfielder Nuri Sahin reported to be on the verge of moves to The Emirates.

The Gunners have not won a trophy since their FA Cup victory over Manchester United in 2005, losing the Champions League final to Barcelona in 2006 and missing out in two Carling Cup finals.

However, Almunia, who left the club during the summer, is confident his former employers are nearing the end of their lengthy wait to win silverware.

“One of these years, everything has to come together and be perfect, and now is the time for Arsenal,” Almunia told the Mirror.

“They’ve signed some good players this year, Santi Cazorla is fantastic.”

Almunia also admitted it was difficult to see the club’s best players leave north London in recent years.

Thierry Henry switched to Barcelona in 2007, and last summer Cesc Fàbregas returned to Camp Nou, while Gael Clichy and Samir Nasri both joined Manchester City.

“As a player at Arsenal, it is hard to see the best players go to other clubs every year. They have missed a lot of great players in the last few years,” Almunia added.

“The first year I came to England, I thought ‘Oh, I’m going to win a lot of things with Arsenal’ but the change then started. The club has been changing every year.”
