Arsenal up for Premier League title fight, declares Arsène Wenger
Arsène Wenger warns Arsenal's Premier League rivals that the Gunners will be title contenders this season

Arsène Wenger has warned Arsenal’s Premier League rivals that the Gunners are ready to fight for the title this season.
The 62-year-old has been busy in the transfer market during the summer, signing Cologne’s Lukas Podolski, Olivier Giroud from Montpellier, and Santi Cazorla from cash-strapped Malaga.
Arsenal have failed to win any silverware since beating Manchester United in the FA Cup final seven years ago, but Wenger is convinced his side are now stronger than previous seasons.
“We want to [compete for honours] and we have a desire to. We are up for it and what we want is to come out of the season and know we have given our best,” Wenger told Arsenal’s website.
“I feel we did that last year, finishing third with the start we had.
“The first target is to do as well as we can in every single game and see where we stand at the end of the season, but of course we want to fight for the championship.”
Wenger added: “We are in a much stronger position now because last summer we lost [Samir] Nasri and [Cesc] Fàbregas, and on top of that we lost [Abou] Diaby and [Jack] Wilshere [to injury].
“We lost four players at the start of last season and that is not the case this time.”
Arsenal, who finished in third place last season, start their new league campaign with a home fixture against Martin O’Neill’s Sunderland on Saturday. ![]()
