Barcelona have agreed a £14.9m deal with Arsenal for the transfer of Alex Song, with the midfielder set to sign a five-year deal at Camp Nou.

The Catalan club have been heavily linked with a move for the Cameroon midfielder this summer and news of the agreement was confirmed just moments after the full-time whistle of Arsenal’s goalless draw with Sunderland in their Premier League opener on Saturday.

A Barcelona statement confirmed a €19m (£14.9m) fee had been agreed, with the 24-year-old set to have a staggering €80m release clause in his Barça contract. Song will undergo a medical at Camp Nou on Monday ahead of the proposed move.

Quizzed over the transfer in his news conference after the stalemate at The Emirates, Arsenal boss Arsène Wenger hinted he may now look to bring in “another midfielder” but insisted the Gunners have adequate cover.

“He [Song] expressed a desire to go to Barcelona,” said Wenger. “We have Wilshere coming back, I believe in one-and-a-half months.

“We have [Abou] Diaby back, we have [Tomas] Rosicky not far away and we might bring another midfielder in as well. You have to be patient a little bit [over any new signings].”

Song becomes the second big-name departure from The Emirates this week after Robin van Persie secured a £24m transfer to Manchester United on Friday.

It is thought Arsenal will now step up their efforts to land Real Madrid midfielder Nuri Sahin on a season-long loan, as the La Liga champions close in on Tottenham’s Luka Modric.
