Liverpool have reportedly triggered a release clause in Joe Allen’s contract by making a £15m bid for the Swansea City midfielder.

Brendan Rodgers worked with the 21-year-old at the Liberty Stadium, but the majority of Liverpool supporters baulked at the reported fee for the Team GB star on Twitter.

Here are some of the Tweets that caught our eye.

James Neve ([email protected]) can’t understand why Liverpool are overspending – again: “I can’t get my head around Liverpool splashing £15m on Joe Allen. They have stacks of central-midfielders!”

And Shannon ‏(@ShannonBrah) is similarly bemused: “I just can’t understand why Liverpool are again going to overpay for Joe Allen at £15m =/ ….”

Amran Sanghera ‏(@AmranSanghera) suggests Liverpool need lessons on budgeting: “Liverpool closing in on Joe Allen for £15m, when will they learn how to spend their money!”

Zac Anthony Palmer ([email protected]) is pleased with the prospective deal for Swansea: “Joe Allen for £15m? Swansea did alright there!”

But Josh Giles ([email protected]) wants Nuri Sahin on loan instead: “Bring in Nuri Sahin on a season-long loan, forget Joe Allen! #LFC”

Aaron Robertson ([email protected]) reckons Allen could become ‘another Charlie Adam’: “Liverpool signing Joe Allen could turn out like signing Charlie Adam, quality player in a minor team, just average in a decent team!”

But Paul Gary Partridge ([email protected]) is happy with the move: “Yesssss!!!!! Liverpool have made a £15M bid for Joe Allen which triggers his contract, he should join us by the end of the week. #LFC”

Chris Birks (@cbirks) is also pleased and pinpoints two more signings: “I’m looking forward for #LFC to confirm the Joe Allen signing. Ibrahim Affelay and Clint Dempsey next please FSG!”

But Anish Parikh ‏(@anishparikh07) believes keeping Daniel Agger should be a more pressing concern: “I am sick of hearing the Joe Allen rumours!! I am more interested in knowing if Daniel Agger is staying or not!! #YNWA”

And Oli Waring ([email protected]) is confused by Liverpool’s transfer moves: “Selling Agger for £18m to the champions and then buying Joe Allen from Swansea just doesn’t make any sense to me!”

Mike Coll ([email protected]) believes Liverpool should copy Newcastle’s strategy in the transfer market: “Liverpool buying Joe Allen for £15m? They could have bought a Demba Ba, Yohan Cabaye and a Papiss Cisse for that amount #shrewdspending #NUFC!”

While Swansea fan IJM89 ‏(@IJM89) wishes Allen well: “Either way whatever happens I wish Joe Allen all the best he’s been an awesome player for us #SCFC #JackArmy!”

Finally, Mickey McArdle ([email protected]) reckons Rodgers and Kenny Dalglish both have the same fault: “£15m for Joe Allen – Brendan Rogers just as silly as Kenny was in the transfer market anyway #joke!”
