Vurnon Anita is reported to be undergoing a medical at Newcastle United as the Ajax defender edges closer to a move to St James’ Park.

The Netherlands international has been heavily linked with a move to Newcastle in recent weeks, and Magpies supporters encouraged the club to snap up the 23-year-old on Twitter.

Here are some of the Tweets that caught our eye.

M Kaarud (‏@K_Ruudster) is concerned for the future of Italian defender Davide Santon at Newcastle: “If Newcastle sign Vurnon Anita (Ajax left-back) what happens with Davide Santon? Both of them are too good to be a back-up for each other.”

Neil Crawford ‏(@TFCSquirrel) is pleased with imminent arrival even though Newcastle are yet to snap up Mathieu Debuchy: “Just as excited about Vurnon Anita joining the team as Debuchy. Looks like a class player. #NUFC #GeordiesInEurope”

And Dean Constantine ‏(@TheSportsDean) reckons Anita must be talented if he played for Ajax: “Just spotted on @skysportsnews that Vurnon Anita is have a medical at #nufc. #Ajax is the best conveyor belt in all football.”

Paul Wilkes, Auditel (‏@WilkoWilkes) is impressed by Newcastle’s ambition in the current transfer window: “Good to hear Vurnon Anita is having a medical @ #NUFC right now, exciting signing and we’ve still not lost any important players *touchwood*!”

Chelsea fan OnlyCFC ‏(@OnlyCFC) is an admirer of the Dutch international: “If Vurnon Anita really is having a medical at #NUFC, that’s good news for them, quality player.”

Meanwhile, Arsenal supporter Hem (‏@hem_arsenal) envisages Anita playing in midfield: “Vurnon Anita. I’ll be damned. #NUFC are getting one heck of a distributor in midfiler. Tiote, Cabaye & Anita is quite brilliant. 4-3-3 ?”

Samuel Loveday (‏@sploveday) thinks he’s worked out where Pardew unearths all these top signings: “Alan Pardew showing he’s clearly a huge Football Manager fan by signing Vurnon Anita.”

But Tom Mapletoft (‏@TomMapletoft) gives the Magpies boss and his chief scout Graham Carr credit: “Pardew and Carr at it again – Vurnon Anita.”

Matthew Fretwell (‏@Nufc_Matthew) can see Anita walking into the team: “Vurnon Anita is having a medical at Newcastle, First signing of the season cable of playing in the first team and not the development squad!”

Connor Hunter ‏(@CHPopadom) can’t help but think of Family Fortunes hosted by Vernon Kay but still gives the club’s supporters a spelling lesson: “Every time I see a tweet about Vurnon Anita I think ‘OUR SURVEY SAYS!’ #NUFC – But hold on #NUFC fans! If we are going to sign Anita, you’ve got to start spelling his name right. It’s VURNON not VERNON. Ok? Cool.”
