Ashley Cole believes Fernando Torres is thriving in his role as Chelsea’s “main man” up front after the striker inspired the Blues to victory over Newcastle on Saturday.

Torres, who only managed 11 goals for Chelsea last term, won the penalty which Eden Hazard tucked away before poking home a sublime finish to seal a 2-0 win over the Magpies and notch up his third goal of the new season.

Roberto Di Matteo has deployed the Spaniard as Chelsea’s main forward so far this season following Didier Drogba’s departure to Shanghai Shenhua.

And left-back Cole says the 28-year-old is now brimming with confidence.

“It was hard for Fernando last season to get many games,” Cole told Chelsea’s website.

“But when he did play he worked hard for the team and now he is the main man he is full of confidence after the European Championships, and he scored great goal [against Newcastle].”

Cole was also full of praise for new signing Eden Hazard, who has impressed in his first few games in the English top flight.

“I had to mark Eden when England played Belgium and I saw how dangerous he was,” he continued.

“I said to the boys after the game this player is going to do well in the Premier League and so far he has.

“There is still a long season to go but the effort and the commitment and what he has done for the team so far has been brilliant.

“He deserves a lot of credit for the great start we have had and hopefully he can keep doing it throughout the season.”
