Can Allen replace Gerrard? Twitter reacts to Liverpool’s new signing
Joe Allen completes a £15m move to Liverpool from Swansea, and Reds fans were generally pleased with the business on Twitter

Joe Allen finally completed a £15m move from Swansea City to Liverpool on Friday, ending weeks of speculation over the midfielder’s future.
The 22-year-old has signed a long-term deal with the Merseyside outfit, and the majority of the Reds supporters welcomed the Wales international’s arrival on Twitter.
Here are some of the Tweets that caught our eye.
Tom (@toonlowdown) finds Liverpool’s overspending humorous: “How much did Liverpool pay for Joe Allen? I’m sure the price was simply HILARIOUS.”
However, Neil Moffatt (@NeilMoffatt) is perplexed by how Rodgers managed to sign Allen: “It puzzles me that Rodgers was able to buy Joe Allen as I thought that he was barred for 12 months from buying Swansea players.”
Tashvir Santilall (@tashsantilall) is critical: “Joe Allen was over-priced, we could of bought experienced and good players with £15m, but we’ll see what he can do!”
Manchester United fan Tommy Doherty (@tweeker147) makes a valid point: “Andy Carroll, Jordan Henderson and Joe Allen cost Liverpool £70m – Eric Cantona, Peter Schmeichel and Ole Gunner Solskjaer cost #MUFC £4.3m.”
Pól O’Dhuiling (@_tubbercurry) sees a common trend emerging at Anfield: “Why am I not surprised Liverpool paid £15m for Joe Allen. They have a habit of paying over the odds for average British players. Andy Caroll…..”
But Chris Lampett (@Lampett88) is happy with the deal: “£15m for Joe Allen I think is great business for Liverpool.”
And Arastu (@ArastuLFC) agrees: “Welcome to #LFC Joe Allen! A brilliant signing by Rodgers, it basically gives us a guy who can distribute passes and keep possession.”
Sam Hart (@samhart7) is confident Allen will become a star: “For all the doubters, Joe Allen is a talent and will become a favourite at Liverpool, you heard it here first! #class”
Mcloving (@alex_roberts87) predicts Rodgers’ new line-up: “Liverpool confirm the signing of Joe Allen. I’m looking forward to having him in the team – Gerrard, Lucas, Cole, Allen midfield with Suárez and Borini upfront!”
Andrew Neal (@vandg1975) believes Swansea are becoming a feeder club: “After Joe Allen signing for #LFC it’s obvious the Swans are going to be a feeder club. They can’t afford to hold onto their top players.”
Imani W (@LFCConnecticut) sees Allen as Gerrard’s eventual replacement: “From what I’ve seen from Joe Allen, he is more of a replacement for Steven Gerrard than Jordan Henderson will ever be. #LFC #greatseasonahead”
But Michael Thomas (@Michael_Beast) is worried for the skipper’s future: “So Joe Allen has joined Liverpool. Crucial in Rodgers’ Swansea system? Where does that leave Steven Gerrard?” ![]()
