Liverpool can’t rely on Luis Suárez for goals, says Gary McAllister

Gary McAllister says Luis Suárez is not a prolific finisher after Liverpool failed to net in their loss at West Brom on Saturday

Gary McAllister has warned Liverpool against relying on Luis Suárez to solve their goal scoring conundrum this season.

The Uruguayan striker was criticised for his wayward finishing at the Hawthorns on Saturday as Brendan Rodgers’ side suffered a humiliating 3-0 defeat by West Bromwich Albion.

Suárez, who was signed by Kenny Dalglish for £22.8m from Ajax in January 2011, netted 11 Premier League goals last season, but he struggled to fill the void left by prolific finisher Fernando Torres.

And McAllister does not consider Suárez to be a clinical goal scorer of the calibre of former Liverpool striker Michael Owen.

“Suárez is a fantastic player, but I don’t know if he is a natural goal scorer, somebody like a Michael Owen,” McAllister told BBC Sport.

“I can see him chipping in with a good amount of goals but is he somebody who is going to get 25 plus? I’m not so sure.

“But that’s me being hyper-critical as he brings so many other things to the game, like linking play and his technical abilities are fantastic.

“Liverpool certainly have to be more clinical with their finishing. Looking back to last season, I can just picture a lot of openings where players were snatching at the chances or trying too hard when they just needed to let it happen.”

The former Liverpool midfielder backed under-fire £20m winger Stewart Downing to improve his goal record for the Reds this season, insisting the England international can hit double figures.

“I worked with Stewart Downing and he has never scored a league goal for Liverpool,” added McAllister.

“He’s got two great feet and very capable of getting himself into double figures as far as I’m concerned.”
