London 2012 Olympic athletics: Usain Bolt defends men’s 200m title

Usain Bolt’s stunning men’s 200m win at London 2012 booked his place in the record books as he became the first man to defend both of sprinting’s premier titles.

Bolt’s time of 19:32 seconds put him ahead of his training partner and good friend Yohan Blake, who came second in 19.44 seconds to take gold in the men’s 200m final.

Warren Weir made it a Jamaican clean sweep by taking bronze in 19:84 secs, as Bolt took his place as one of the greatest athletes in history following his 100m on Saturday night.

“This is what I wanted and I got it,” said Bolt. “I’m very proud of myself. After a rough season I came out here and did it.

“I thought the world record was possible. I guess I was fast but not fit enough. I could feel my back strain a little bit, so all I did was to keep my form. I’m very dedicated to my work and London meant so much to me.”

Bolt believes working with Blake and Weir is what produced the Jamaican one-two-three and he felt that they pushed each other all the way.

He said: “I reckon my coach will be going crazy right now. We’ve all been working really hard this season. We push each other and this is the end product, so we’re happy.”
