Karina Bryant has spoken of her joy at finally landing “the big one” by claiming her first Olympic medal.

The judo star is a multiple world and European medallist, but by claiming bronze in the over-78kg class in her fourth Games she finally realised a lifelong aim.

London-born Bryant beat Ukrainian Iryna Kindzerska in the bronze medal match in front of a packed ExCeL in her home town.

“It feels amazing, I have dreamt of this for years,” she said. “Fourth time lucky, and I have finally got a medal around my neck.

“I have won multiple medals but this is the big one and it just feels truly amazing because I have wanted it for so many years.

“This is the one I really wanted, I have been after it for so many years.

“I got to share the moment with the British crowd too which was great, and at the same time they lifted me and I thank all of them for turning up.”
