Edinson Cavani has warned Team GB that Luis Suárez will thrive in front of a partisan crowd when Uruguay take on the hosts at the Millennium Stadium.

The 24-year-old has been subjected to jeers in Uruguay’s opening two Group A games, and Cavani backed his team-mate to answer his critics amid an unfriendly reception on Wednesday night.

“Luis knows that the crowd might be against him, but that is the worst thing that they can do,” Cavani told the Daily Mail.

“He can punish any team in the world, but if you antagonise him you will give him more of a reason to punish you.”

Cavani, who scored 33 goals in 47 appearances for Napoli last season, believes Uruguay are the strongest team in Group A and is confident the South Americans can still reach the quarter-finals following their 2-0 defeat by Senegal.

“We know we need to beat Team GB,” added Cavani. “We are very confident in our attacking ability and from what we have seen we can score goals against them.

“We know we need to improve, but we believe we are the best team in the group and we will be out to show that.

“Luis has been telling us about the players because, of course, he has experience playing against a lot of them.”

Meanwhile, Tom Cleverley has warned his Team GB team-mates not to underestimate Uruguay, earmarking Cavani, Suárez and Gastón Ramírez as the South American’s danger-men.

“Luis Suárez, Edinson Cavani, Gaston Ramirez – they are all good players who can hurt us so we have got to stop them,” said Cleverley.

“They have got quality but they also have weaknesses which we can exploit.

“It is a tight group. We must be positive and go for the win. We’ve got to try to top the group. We have got to stamp our mark on the game.”
