Michael Carrick believes Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea is continuing to show improvement after a difficult first season in the Premier League.

The 21-year-old shot-stopper moved from Atlético Madrid to the Red Devils in a reported £17m deal last summer, with Sir Alex Ferguson viewing the Spain Under-23 international as a long-term replacement for Edwin van der Sar.

De Gea, who had made 84 appearances for Atlético before his move to England, made an indifferent start to his career at the Old Trafford, with a string of high-profile errors resulting in plenty of criticism for the United goalkeeper.

However, Carrick has been impressed by De Gea’s strong character and noticeable improvement and is backing the Spaniard to continue his progression over the coming months.

“David just keeps getting better,” Carrick told United’s website. “We knew he would. The manager has shown great faith in him and he’s getting stronger and stronger.

“His distribution is fantastic and he makes saves at good times. I’m sure he’ll continue to do that.”

Carrick was omitted from Roy Hodgson’s England squad for Euro 2012, meaning the former Tottenham midfielder was able to participate in a full pre-season campaign for the Red Devils.

“I’ve had four games and now that half a game so it’s lot of minutes under my belt,” he added. “I’m feeling really good.

“There are still 10 days or so until the start of the season and that’s enough time to shake things up a little bit more and sharpen up a bit so we’ll be ready for the Everton game.”
